Design for people as they are

Design for people as they are

It means that people are who they are, they behave how they behave. Designing without understanding this is asking for failure.

Example: Chat GPT was able to reach 100 million users in 2 months because (amongst other things), they understood people are familiar with chat.

People don’t use your products in a vacuum. Emotional, physical, situational contexts among others have huge influence on how your product is used. Find out the context to make better design decisions.

Understand goals, then design for them

Understand goals, then design for them

Understand goals, then design for them

It’s unlikely that using your product is someones end goal. A lot of the time people are using your product as a means to and end. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Understanding the goal is essential for understanding what your design should do and how it can be made obsolete.

Example: The iPod was fantastic, but putting the music in my phone made it obsolete because my goal was to feel pumped up while working out, not to use an iPod.
